How do I know if I qualify for a ECO4 cavity wall insulation grant

The UK government funding for cavity wall insulation is sourced through energy efficiency schemes with the objectives of reducing carbon emissions and assisting households facing challenges in covering heating expenses.

The ECO4 grant scheme is now more closely tied to household income, ensuring that low-income households who are not claiming eligible benefits can still have access to free insulation grants. To qualify, households must have an income of £31,000 or less.

Homes falling within Energy Performance Certificate Bands A, B, and C are no longer eligible for the scheme, as they are considered sufficiently energy efficient.

What is cavity wall insulation?

Brick-built properties erected between 1924 and 1982 are likely to have a cavity between two brick layers or between bricks and blocks. It is likely that this space was left uninsulated during the initial construction of the property. Cavity wall insulation utilises materials such as mineral fibre wool, polystyrene granules, beads, or polyurethane foam and is applied to fill this gap.

This process creates an effective insulating barrier, significantly diminishing heat loss through the walls and potentially reducing heat loss by up to 35%. If cavity wall insulation cannot be applied to your home you may be able to claim for an external wall insulation grant.

How do I know if my house is suitable for cavity wall insulation?

Before applying for a ECO4 cavity wall insulation grant it is worth checking your home has cavity walls.

Most properties built of brick from 1924 onwards are likely to have cavity walls. If your property was built before 1924, it is likely to have solid walls. Homes constructed after 1982 should already have cavity wall insulation, as building regulations were changed to require its installation during the property construction process

Cavity Wall

If your home has cavity walls, the bricks are typically in a uniform pattern, with all bricks arranged lengthwise.

Solid Wall

For homes with solid walls, the brick arrangement features an alternating pattern, where some bricks are laid across the wall, exposing their smaller ends on the exterior.
